Topic: Is It Okay For Christians To Wear Makeup?
This has been a really controversial issue in the church, because while some think its fine to wear makeup, other Christians think natural and makeup free is the way to go.
There are two biblical passages that gives us some clarity to this question.
1 Timothy 2:9-10
Likewise also that women should adorn themselves in respectable apparel, with modesty and self control, not with braided hair or gold or pearls or costly attire but with what is proper for women who pross godliness and with good works.
Apostle Peter also makes this same point in his first epistle.
Do not let your adorning be external, the braiding of hair and putting on of jewelry, or the clothing you wear. But let your adorning be the hidden person of the heart with the imperishable beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit which in Gods sight is very precious. 1 Peter 1:3-4
At first glance it feels like Paul and Peter are telling women not to braid their hair. But at the time they wrote their letters, women spent excessively long time into braiding their hair to intricate styles, which caused them to put an inordinate amount of time into their appearance for the sake of their hair being a status symbol.
So Paul and Peter are actually exhorting women not to be vain and overly concerned with their appearance but rather to focus on the beauty that comes from an obedient heart devoted to loving God and their neighbor. They aren’t saying that women can never braid their hair, wear gold or pearls, make wise purchase of quality clothing or improve their appearance in appropriate ways including using makeup.
In summary Christians can wear makeup but do it with modesty and moderation, because truth is so much of everything is bad.
Moderation is key
